The tower clock of St. Joseph's Church in Obersorpe

A memorial shows the passage of time

The St. Joseph's Church in Obersorpe is so remarkable for several reasons that it is a listed building - even though it is relatively young for a church building in this region. Due to its prominent location, the defiant quarry stone building can be seen from afar. As you approach, you notice the special tower clock: instead of numbers, it bears the names of soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. An unusual memorial in a prominent location.

For a long time, the Christian faith was associated Obersorpe associated with effort: Because they did not have their own church, they had to walk for up to 1.5 hours to attend church services in Oberkirchen attend church services. The pastor only came to the church for special masses or the sacrament of the dead. Finally, a church was built in Obersorpe in 1896/97. Due to the limited financial resources of only 1700 marks, the congregation did much of the work themselves. When new bells had to be purchased after the First World War in 1918 Werden (44% of German bells had been melted down for weapons), the congregation decided to invest in the tower clock first: It was to commemorate the soldiers killed in the war from the upper Sorpetal killed in the war. The tower clock with the 12 names was inaugurated in 1929. At that time, it still had to be wound once a week but has since been converted to an electric drive.

After the Obersorpers were initially even offered second-hand clocks, the company Kanngießer & Sohn from Hildesheim was commissioned to build the clock. Company founder Joseph Kanngießer came for a personal meeting. He made an offer of 1233 Reichsmark for the clock and the design of the clock face, which is a square with a side length of 2 meters. Instead of the numerals, there are 12 painted memorial plaques, each 40 cm in diameter. They bear the first name initials, the surname and the date of death of the respective soldier. The memorial plaques are connected by square minute dots. The corners of the clock face read "They died | in the World War | 1914 | 1918". The original, corrected design was intended to read "They died for us". The hands symbolize the sword and laurel leaf for power and punitive justice. The hands and inscriptions are heavily gilded with 23-carat gold leaf.

The congregation Obersorpe owes its church and tower clock to a remarkable sense of community. Twelve men from the area had not returned from the First World War after serving as soldiers. For years, young men in particular had collected money for a war memorial. Only the type of tribute was initially undecided. In the end, they agreed on a gold-plated tower clock as a memento. The shooting club promised to pay for future repairs and also donated a bronze plaque, stone steps under the plaque and a fence. 14 girls dressed in black wore wreaths at the ceremonial inauguration of the clock, two "maidens" dressed in white walked alongside with palm branches, followed by "young men", guests of honour and the shooting club. With prayers, music, speeches and coffee, the celebration in honor of the dead and their watch was a feast for the whole family.

When our clock will tell thee, wanderer, the time, Remember the dead Helden; They once fell in strife; To thee, too, it will one day announce The hour of the last conflict; May God's mercy then find And eternal bliss.

The story of the special watch spread surprisingly far and wide. For a man from the neighboring Rehsiepen it was an unexpected greeting from home after the Second World War. He was in Ukrainian captivity when he discovered a picture of the local clock memorial in the local newspaper. The headline of the article read "This is how Germany honors its fallen".
