You can experience vivid stories and living local history in the numerous museums of the Schmallenberger Sauerland and the vacation region Eslohe experience. In addition to museums, there are many other places of interest where you can get to know the history, art, culture and beliefs of Schmallenberg and Eslohe.
In the Westphalian Slate Mining and Local History Museum Holthausen you can find out all about (everyday) life in the Schmallenberg Sauerland in times gone by. Find out how slate and rock were mined and how they were formed over millions of years. Get to know the animals of the forest and learn many vivid things about earlier ways of life and work, about economic life in the Schmallenberg. Sauerland The museum has a printing workshop, a textile and flax department and a bookbindery.
A special highlight of your tour is the "Südwestfäliche Galerie", which shows art from the region from the 19th and 20th centuries with collections from Eugen Senge-Platten, Hinrich Grauenhorst, Paul Hermann Schödder, Carl Siebert and many others.

A model railway layout with a layout area of 66 m² is on display in a former knitting mill. 92 trains run on 550 meters of track and delight model railroad fans of all ages. 15 computer-controlled vehicles run on the roads of the layout and a day-night light control system lets it go dark every 24 minutes. At the same time, the lights on the houses and cars are switched on by time and random control.

Immerse yourself in the history of justice - virtually "on site". The Justice Museum is housed in the attic of the local court Bad Fredeburg housed in the attic of the district court. Embark on an exciting journey through more than seven hundred years of jurisprudence in Bad Fredeburg and take a seat on the "poor bench", for example. You can also see a gallows, a funeral pyre, a prison cell, a femelinde, a seal press, legal literature and much more.
There is a guided tour every two weeks on Fridays at 4.00 pm. As the number of participants is limited, registration is required. The guided tours are free of charge, but the association is happy to receive voluntary donations.

In an old mill in Latrop you will find the lovingly compiled Forestry Museum. It displays old tools, pictures of former forest and village life, historical forester's files and information on the development of the chainsaw.

The museum is located in Schmallenberg-Latropopposite house no. 1 belonging to the Vonnahme family. Parking is available at the village hall next door.

The 925th anniversary of the founding of the monastery Grafschaft was the reason for the opening of a museum on the art and history of the monastery in May 1997. In addition to the baroque monastery building, the museum displays liturgical objects, paraments, books from the monastery library and relics, which provide an insight into Benedictine and Borromean monastic culture.
On individual guided tours with the historian Barbara Rickert, you will discover the eventful building history and the diverse uses of the monastery complex up to the present day. Be fascinated by the valuable treasures of church art in the museum and immerse yourself in the spirituality of the place.
The museum is open on Wednesdays & Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00.

In the historic Landsberger Hof, the SauerlandMuseum's permanent exhibition tells the story of the region from its beginnings in the Stone Age through the Duchy of Westfalen to the present day. The new building offers space for contemporary special exhibitions on art and culture.

The Backhaus in Wenholthausen has been used in various ways over the centuries, e.g. as a smithy, post office and wheelwright's workshop.
Today, around 25 - 30 delicious loaves of bread can be baked in the unique pear-shaped oven within an hour: Genuine Sauerländer bread made according to old recipes.
Open every Thursday from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

The mill is also open during the annual "Deutschen Mühlentag".
The Stertschultenhof is a special farm and is one of the most outstanding farms in the Sauerland. The main house was built in 1769 and is lovingly maintained by the Heimat- und Förderverein Cobbenrode lovingly maintained. The elaborately decorated gable is one of the most impressive in the Sauerland.
Enjoy the special atmosphere of this house and rediscover the past. There is also delicious homemade cake and aromatic coffee. The dialect archive Sauerland has its domicile here.

There has been a mill on this site since the beginning of the 19th century. Initially used as a sawmill, then as a rapeseed mill and finally, since the middle of the century, as Knochenmühle, it is still fully functional today and can be visited on request Werden.
It is also open regularly at Deutschen Mühlentag.
TIP: The Knochenmühle is located directly on an attractive hiking tour around Eslohe, the Esloher Rundwanderweg E1.

In the 19th century, Reister beer was a household name in the region. It was brewed by the family at Hof Kenter using fresh water from the "Rainspring" and their own hops and sold by horse-drawn cart in the surrounding villages. The "Felsenkeller", a former cooling tunnel that still exists today, is the last witness to the Reister beer era and can be visited today Werden.
