The detail lover
Encounter with Martin Schürmann from Raumzenit
Shelves full of fabric samples and various types of wood, the drawers filled with found objects such as buttons and ropes. In the middle is a large table on which Martin Schürmann and his team can spread out anything that inspires them for a new project. The "Raumzeniter" develop holistic concepts to create places that radiate warmth and where people simply feel comfortable. This is why many restaurants in the region are regular customers.
"You enter into a bit of a marriage for the duration of the project."
Create atmosphere
Creating atmosphere. How does that work? In any case, it involves much more than "just" setting good lighting and putting some nice furniture in a room. Whether it's a hotel, café, horse clinic or farm store - it's about getting to know the people behind the project, implementing the vision they have for their business or private home and translating their needs into colors, shapes, surfaces, furniture and functions. Every Raumzenit project is therefore unique and initially uncharted territory, which the team approaches question by question and idea by idea. Where should the fruit be placed so that it is easily accessible and looks great? How can I simplify processes? What are the acoustics like in the room? An extremely detailed and multifaceted process. "This requires a lot of trust from both sides," explains Martin Schürmann. "You enter into a bit of a marriage for the duration of the project."
He sees his biggest task in recent years as putting together his creative team of 15 people: architects and technicians, construction managers and product designers - all working together to make customers' dreams come true Werden. "We work together on ways of living and the feeling of space from the inside to the outside and vice versa. Individual and holistic solutions can only be created if we think in terms of building construction and interior design in a networked way."
It is not always possible to accompany a project from the very beginning. Many hotels and inns in the Schmallenberg Sauerland and the vacation region Eslohe have a centuries-old history and therefore an equally historically beautiful appearance. "I always tell customers to leave the hotels as they are, but give them the chance to do something new. You don't have to jump on every trend. Something that has grown over 350 years should stay. But I can easily change colors, pictures and wallpaper to create a completely different effect." Martin Schürmann appreciates the sustainability of this approach. An important issue for him. "We work hard to ensure that our projects can also be dismantled, i.e. broken down into their individual components such as wood or stone Werden. We also try to source materials from the region wherever possible." I am interested in how such a creative and complex planning process works: Where do the ideas and the famous flow come from? "I soak up all the information like a vacuum cleaner, then I lie down on my blue sofa and the ideas come of their own accord," says Martin Schürmann and laughs. For him, the world is pure inspiration every second. He owes many of his ideas to nature in particular. "It can be really exhausting to be out and about with me. I translate every mood of light and every shadow into shapes, colors and ultimately ideas." That's why he enjoys traveling, not only in faraway places, Sondern also in his home region, the Schmallenberg Sauerland. "I like that it's so tidy here. For me, the region is the cozy living room of the Sauerland. I think it's a really good place to live. I definitely feel at home here."
