Bärbel Michels
Love at first sight.
... was when Bärbel Michels discovered the Old Forester's Lodge in Rehsiepen in the quiet Schmallenberg Sorpe Valley at 600 metres, which was for sale. "I immediately dreamed what could be made of it." 47 years ago, the home care nurse bought the house together with her husband by mail auction - and the two of them never regretted it for a single day. They restored the historic homestead from 1885 with oven and smokehouse to its original state
"Even today I still stand in front of it often in astonishment and rejoice every day in life in and with nature. I could not imagine anything more beautiful."
It is a paradise on earth
Deer, rabbits, birds, slowworms and fire salamanders love the natural garden with flowers, vegetables and herbs. Below, orchids and cotton grass grow on a wet meadow and are estimated to be around "120 other plant species", says the nature lover. Enthusiastic hikers also stop by the house, because a circular trail of the Sauerland high altitude flight passes directly by the house. Sometimes a little conversation develops there - and when Bärbel Michels has time, she likes to show them the garden and the cosy interiors. In order to preserve the listed ensemble for posterity, she and her husband established a foundation a few years ago. What the guardian of the local heritage so likes about the region is not only the nature, but also the uncomplicated nature of the people. "When I'm in the garden and something comes apart, nobody here looks at me diagonally when I jump into a shop in Schmallenberg in my green work trousers. I find it a great freedom."
He was practically born with a passion for wood. Even as a young boy, he enjoyed helping out in his grandfather's workshop, which he opened in 1932 inSchmallenberg-Sögtrop in a small bakehouse and which was later continued by his father. Grandpa had actually wanted his older brother from Hans-Gerhard Schörmann to take over the joinery. But he had completely different plans - fortunately, because it was a dream come true for him. "I didn't look around for anything else. I just wanted to be a carpenter and stay in this place, in this house." He took over the business at the age of 27 and has continued to develop it ever since. Whereas a few years ago he mostly made stairs, doors, windows and solid wood furniture, today he concentrates mainly on high-quality, unusual interior fittings for commercial customers. But his private customers also come to him with creative, challenging projects, such as the construction of a home theater. He came to the hotel and catering industry via the planning office RAUMZENIT from Schmallenbergwhich commissioned him to build an acoustic ceiling in the Familotel Ebbinghof hotel. This was followed by Hotel Deimann with a shopping arcade and Bergdorf LiebesGrün, in whose chalets and nests Hans-Gerhard Schörmann was commissioned with the complete interior fit-out. Wall cladding, seating, bathrooms, kitchens, beds - everything that is made of wood there comes from the Schörmann joinery. 130 cubic meters of oak and ash from local forests were used. Short transportation routes are particularly important to him. His way of working has changed enormously in recent years - it has become more varied and even more creative. He finds it exciting to combine so many different areas and materials when working on orders from the hospitality industry Werden. The carpenter was able to learn how to work with fabric, glass, stone and metal and how to perfectly coordinate them with the matching wood. For a counter at Schützenhalle in Kirchrarbach for example, he treated the surface of copper plates to give them a dark look and then set them in an oak frame. "Oak is my favorite wood and has been all the rage for a few years now. Whereas boards used to have as smooth a surface as possible, today knotty, heavily brushed wood is in demand. As the knots draw more varnish, this creates interesting shades of color." In order to bring these out later, for example as wall cladding, you need a good eye for the gradient structures of the wood. This is why the joinery boss is always on site to ensure that the projects are implemented as he envisioned them Werden.
For the master craftsman, every day begins with anticipation of the tasks ahead, "even on Monday", he adds with a smile. "My six employees are equally passionate about what they do, otherwise it wouldn't work." His customers sense this. In fact, he would learn the same trade again today and he has also passed on his enthusiasm to his son Eric, who would like to take over his father's business one day. In his free time, Hans-Gerhard Schörmann likes to enjoy the view from Winkhausen from the surrounding wooded hills. He regularly goes golfing there with his wife Susanne. "I don't really need a vacation anymore, because that's pure relaxation for me."
